Dispatch 042: The Ladakh Circuit — From Mahanoora to the Top of the World.
05:30 UTC // MAHANOORA DEPARTURE & THE ALTITUDE TAX
Every expedition looks perfect on paper. When Aqib and I fired up the engines in Mahanoora, the objective was clear: push through Ladakh, hit the highest motorable road in the world, and make it back in one piece.
The first day hit us harder than expected. We were gaining altitude fast, and the air thinned out brutally. By the time we made our first push, things went sideways. Aqib started struggling with shallow breathing—the classic red-alert signs of acute mountain sickness (AMS). I pulled the plug on our immediate advance and rushed him to the nearest hospital. Seeing your brother hooked up to O2 in a high-altitude medical outpost is a stark reminder of where you are.
Terrain Telemetry & Pass Status
- Elevation Marker: Max elevation 5,798 M (19,024 FT) at Umling La
- Road Condition: Asphalt, dirt, and severe freezing mud at Zoji La
- Medical Status: Code Red on Day 1 (AMS) – Resolved via hospital O2 therapy
- Convoy Setup: Two riders, machines fully loaded
"The convoy is only as fast as its most vulnerable element. You don't leave a man behind, and you don't push until the vitals are green. The mountains demand their toll, but brotherhood pays the debt."
Chasing the Sky: Pangong Tso to Umling La
After a few hours of medical stabilization and sheer willpower, Aqib gave the nod. The mission was a go. Once we broke through the initial altitude barrier, the landscape cracked open into pure magic. Riding alongside the freezing, crystal-blue expanse of Pangong Tso felt like navigating another planet.
But the real target was higher. We pointed the tires toward Umling La. At 19,024 feet, the engines starved for oxygen just like we did. Standing there, freezing our boots off at the highest motorable pass on Earth, made every ounce of pain worth it. It was extreme fun—the kind of euphoria you only unlock by pushing past the breaking point.
Equipment & Field Survival Observations
01 // Medical Protocol
No gambling with oxygen. Immediate extraction to the hospital upon Aqib's AMS symptoms saved the expedition. Vitals prioritized over miles.
02 // The Drass Gauntlet
On the return leg from Kargil, the weather system collapsed on us. Hitting Drass—the second coldest inhabited place on earth—we rode directly into a wall of torrential, freezing rainfall.
03 // Traction & Visibility
Initiating the climb toward Zoji La and Zero Point, the road turned into a nightmare of slick mud and freezing fog. Water breached our outer shells, visors fogged, and visibility dropped to zero. We rode shoulder-to-shoulder, engines howling, fighting for every inch of traction until we dropped into the sanctuary of Sonamarg.
